NHS Entitlement


Will you have to pay?

Since the standard eye examination has been privatised most people will need to pay but some are still entitled to free eye examinations including..

. Under 16

. Aged 16, 17 or 18 and in full time education

. Aged 60 or over

. Diagnosed glaucoma patient

. Been advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma

. Aged 40 or over and are a parent, brother, sister, son or daughter of a diagnosed glaucoma patient

. Diagnosed as diabetic

. Registered as severely sight impaired/ blind or sight- impaired/ partially sighted

. Need complex lenses

. Someone whose sight test is carried out through the hospital eye department as part of the

  management of your eye condition

. You/ Partner receive – Income support

- Income based jobseeker's Allowance

- Pension credit Guarantee credit

- (Incapacity benefit or disability living allowance do NOT count)

. Entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate

. Named on a valid HC2 certificate (and may get help towards costs if named on HC3)



Many of these patients will also be entitled to help with the cost of their spectacles/contact lenses with NHS vouchers.


The NHS will NOT pay for a contact lens fit or aftercare appointment
